Moringa powder, comes from a tree named Moringa, native to the areas of India, and South Asia. The plant is called magic tree, since all the parts of the plant are used for medicinal and nutritive purposes
I saw a number of posts and recommendations on web about Moringa powder. I was tempted to try it but felt it will be another health fad. Later, I decided to do my research about the Moringa and realised that we have already been using it over the years.
When I spoke to my mom about Moringa, my belief got reaffirmed as she mentioned how Moringa plant parts, have been used in regular food and it is nothing exotic. Traditionally it has been used as a cooked vegetable for many years.
Different parts of Moringa tree have different nutritive value. The leaves, roots, seeds, flowers, stem all are used to make herbal medicines. The leaves are slightly bitter in taste and is used in powdered form. The stems are known as drumsticks which is most commonly used to make veggies and sambhar.
The flowers have a slight mushroom like flavour and is used to make vegetable in India, traditionally known as Suhanjana ki Phali. I remember eating it as a child, my mom used to make a delicious version of it.
Moringa powder contains vitamins, minerals, amino acid, beta carotene, anti-oxidants, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Most food lose its nutritive value when left or stored for a long period of time.
