Raising children is a strenuous task. Managing children, work and home can be intimidating for parents.  Sharing and delegating chores to children benefits both parents and children.

  1. Children who are given the responsibility to do things on their own have better self-esteem and confidence. When children contribute by doing chores they feel capable and valuable. The fact that parents can trust them with tasks makes them more confident.

  2. Kids become dextrous by doing household chores. Young children benefit immensely as they improve their gross and fine motor skills. They feel a sense of accomplishment when they do their own tasks.

  3. A study by Harvard University suggests that children who are given age-appropriate chores become independent adults. They are better able to manage their lives without the support of parents.

  4. Children feel capable. This helps them take responsibility for many other things. they don’t shy away from taking initiatives later on in life.

  5. When everyone helps in managing the house, it fosters team spirit. It strengthens the relationship between the parents and children.

A few important things to remember while delegating responsibilities to children:

  1. In the beginning, they will not be perfect and efficient while completing their chores. Adults must be supportive and appreciative of their efforts.

  2. It will take a bit longer for the tasks to be completed. A lot of patience is required in dealing with children initially. The key is to remember they are learning and it takes a while before they can master it.

  3. Always give age-appropriate chores to children. Otherwise, it can lead to frustration and demotivate the child.

Here is a list of age-appropriate chores. please remember that every child is unique and grows at his/ her pace. Always see the child’s unique capabilities before giving him tasks.

Chores for preschoolers

Preschoolers are still learning to follow instructions. they can undertake simple tasks which require one or two steps of instructions. For eg: Please put the toys in the basket. Then put the basket on the table.

  1. Put the toys away

  2. Keep their dirty dishes in the kitchen sink

  3. Put the clothes in the laundry basket

  4. Pile the books

  5. Trash the wrappers and papers in the bin

  6. Get his/her shoes and jacket (if it is kept at a place accessible for the kid)

Chores for schoolers

School going children can handle more complex instructions as compared to preschoolers.

  1. Tidy their room

  2. Make up their bed

  3. Lay the dining table

  4. Help clear the table after meals

  5. Put their clothes in the closet

Chores for 7- 9-year-olds

Children at this age are more independent and can easily do the above-listed tasks. In addition to that, they can also try the following chores:

  1. Help prepare their breakfast

  2. Help feed and take care of the younger children

  3. Sort laundry

  4. Mop and dust their room

  5. Help in cleaning the garden

  6. Pick up the weeds

Remember to be patient and let children learn the tasks at their own pace. Appreciating children for their efforts, motivates them to continue taking responsibilities.
